Making Contact With All Experiences

As discussed, mindfulness practice helps you make contact with all experiences, even those which feel painful or uncomfortable

  • Many clinical studies have determined attempts to avoid or suppress uncomfortable internal experiences can actually backfire and lead to the paradoxical effect of an increase in the very negative thoughts or feelings one is trying to eliminate and not experience.
    • For example, I would like you to quickly identify a time you felt deep shame or sadness. Now spend the next minute thinking about anything you want as long as it is not the memory you just identified. Press the play button when you are ready to start. You will hear a gong to begin and a gong after one minute signaling you to stop.
