Noticing Thoughts and Feelings

When you become aware of a thought or feeling that is grabbing your attention, tell yourself "I am having the thought I am a loser" or "I am having the feeling of sadness". Labeling your thoughts and feelings as they arise helps you stay in the present moment and separate yourself from the thoughts or feelings.

In other words, there is a difference between thinking from the thought "I am a loser" and observing the thought "I am a loser".

"It is remarkable how liberating it feels to be able to see that your thoughts are just thoughts and they are not 'you' or 'reality'...the simple act of recognizing your thoughts as thoughts can free you from the distorted reality they often create and allow for more clear-sightedness and a greater sense of manageability in your life."
